I've been in the advertising industry for over 20 years. I've worked for tiny agencies, medium-sized agencies, national agencies, and big international ones - across a wide range of industries. And after all that experience I still love the challenge (and fear) of staring at a blank piece of paper and coming up with fresh big ideas, words and pictures. I work across all media including television, video content, online, digital, outdoor, ambient, direct, point of sale, print and radio.
As an INFP (Introvert, Intuition, Feeling, Perceiving) personality type, you won't find me throwing creative tantrums and causing mayhem. I'm a calm team player who gets on with everybody across all departments, and just gets on with the work.
I'm available for freelance projects. Get in touch by calling +64 274 928 164 or email tony@aubrey.co.nz

EDUCATION:
I completed University Entrance (accredited), but school wasn't really my thing.
Ever since watching Bewitched on television when I was a kid, I was enchanted by Samantha's husband Darren who worked in an advertising agency. He spent his days with his feet on his desk shuffling through advertising concept boards and playing golf. That was when I decided I wanted to work in advertising. It took me a while to figure out how to bluff my way into an advertising agency though, so before I managed to pull that off I went through a few thoroughly unrewarding jobs including working in a bank, a telephone shop, as a kitchen hand (I lasted one night) and a few other equally uncreative career pursuits. But it's fair to say the best education I've had by far has been the last 15+ years working in the wild and crazy world of advertising with all the other incredibly talented misfits. However, after all this time I still haven't had the chance to put my feet up during work, or play golf. But I love it all the same.
"You remain in my mind one of the greatest creatives I have ever met. Thank you for all your kind help. All the best for the future."
Sir Ray Avery, CEO, Medicine Mondiale - New Zealander of the Year 2010.
"We have had the pleasure of working with Tony on numerous projects, including the launch of a new brand campaign and our company’s vision and values. Throughout all the projects Tony has worked on he has been invaluable in the creative process, execution, and delivery. We have been blown away with the creative flair he possesses and the passion he has carried for our brand."
Hilary Bush, National Marketing Manager & Belinda Barnes, National Marketing Coordinator, Generation Homes.
"I well remember the day you came up with a campaign concept on the back of a table napkin in just a few minutes and we went with it! The University of Auckland has indeed achieved significant marketing milestones during your time on our account and you have every reason to be proud of your contribution and these achievements. Meantime all the best for your next endeavours and I too hope we get to work together again in the future."
Adrienne Cleland, Director of Administration and Registrar, The University of Auckland
"In my role as Marketing Manager for the University of Auckland, I worked closely with King St Advertising from 2006 to 2013. Tony was the Executive Creative Director during this time and we worked on numerous brand and student recruitment campaigns together. Tony had a very good understanding of the tertiary market and the challenges the University faced and was able to develop and deliver creative and effective campaigns for us. Tony was a pleasure to work with. He was a good listener, always open to exploring new ideas and a very good team member. I wish Tony all the very best with his future endeavours."
Dianne Head, Director of Communications and Marketing, The University of Auckland
"Tony is a highly skilled creative, who has the rare ability to link strategy with a strong creative execution. Tony works closely with clients throughout the creative process, gathering information to refine his thought patterns. He will often present numerous ideas, and will push boundaries to help you stand out from the crowd. His success in nailing a concept comes from an ability to truly listen to and understand his clients and their customers."
Alice Moore, former Marketing Manager, Altum / Summit Quinphos
“We sought out the services of Tony Aubrey to assist us to gain new clientele within the Waikato / Bay of Plenty regions. A week later, Tony presented to us an outstanding and creative gift to send to potential clientele to encourage them to engage our services. Tony had created a prototype of this gift that he proposed; it was simply genius and would be impossible for any potential client to ever forget. Tony’s creative ability and adventurous spirit makes them stand out from the rest. In my view Tony is a genius when it comes to creative marketing concepts.”
Max Whitehead, Whitehead Group Employment Solutions
"When Tony puts concept to paper, you know it will be something a bit quirky, without fail witty and it might even get you into a bit of trouble! Much like the man himself. Tony is lucky to be much loved by his creative team who are charged with the challenge of implementing and doing justice to his ideas. But, no matter how extraordinary a concept he presents to us, there are three things we can be certain of: the concept is always first rate, the client will love it, and we will have fun along the way. Tony is an awesome Creative Director, colleague and friend."
Kath Kudo, Senior Designer, KingSt Advertising
"Whether you need a down-the-line option or something to push creative boundaries, Tony can be relied on for great creative. A consummate professional, his cool, calm personality makes every job easy, even when the pressure is on. He’s the gentleman of the ad industry and working with him is always a pleasure."
Katherine Parrott, former Account Director, KingSt Advertising
"Tony is the bomb to work with. I am constantly amazed by his creative talents and so are my clients. A strategic thinker, Tony drills down to the detail to ensure his ideas are always right for the audience and the brand. He has this amazing ability to come up with not just one but many great ideas to make a brand or ad campaign stand out head and shoulders above the competition. Every campaign I’ve worked with Tony on has produced amazing results for my clients. I cannot recommend him highly enough.”
Joelle Cross, former General Manager / Account Director, KingSt Advertising
"Conceited, tiresome, boring. Well, none of those words describe Tony. It's almost like he is constantly high, surely not, maybe he is being a surfer and all (it's not politically correct to typecast people however this reference is not PC so who cares). Anyway, back to Tony being high, he isn't but he is laid back, contemplative, witty and f#%ken clever. Say no more really. Always look forward to getting another complicated brief from Tony. He will tell you that he likes to empower his photographers and entrust them to take ownership of the project while allowing personal and career growth opportunities. I will tell you that he is right in part and there hasn't been a brief yet that hasn't tested my ability. UNPRETENTIOUS, that's Tony - just ignore the cool little doggy, nice black 4 wheel drive, surfy talk, cool house on the Mount… Luv working with Tony."
Paul Sutherland, Photographer, PS Photography
"I worked with Tony for nearly two years. In that time he was Creative Director of KingSt and I was a freelance creative. I found him to be an excellent boss. He was receptive to great ideas, bold, supportive and decisive - qualities you want in a Creative Director. Unlike others in his position, he never nitpicked or prevaricated. He was calm under pressure and always extremely pleasant to deal with. I would recommend Tony for a position with any organisation looking for a Creative Director who can bring out the best in any team. I certainly would welcome the opportunity to work with him again. However, given that his preferred workspace is a floating wall-less fibreglass cubicle approximately 9'6" x 23" that is prone to movement, finding him might require a drone or possibly a trained dolphin."
Glenda Kane, Senior Copywriter
"Tony worked with us from the inception of The Flooring Room and has been involved in all facets of branding, promoting and positioning the business from name creation to the look and feel of what we have created. Tony knew we needed to set ourselves apart from the other flooring shops and the way to do this was with a personal, family approach with the strap line of “real value with real family values”. The thing that surprised me most about this approach is that it has helped create a great culture within the business and customers really do care about this personal positioning. Tony’s got great innovative ideas which has led to some really fun promotions. I highly recommend him."
Steve Ferris, Managing Director, The Flooring Room
